    What does the thyroid do?

    The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped organ in your neck, just above your collarbone. It works with the parathyroid glands to produce hormones that control metabolism and calcium levels. Metabolism is your body's way of turning food into energy to carry out activities and bodily functions.

    Symptoms of an Overactive Thyroid (Hyperthyroidism)

    Symptoms of an overactive thyroid can include weight loss, fatigue, nervousness, decreased concentration, rapid heart rate, tremors, excessive sweating and heat intolerance. Please note these symptoms do not always indicate hyperthyroidism, nor does everyone suffering from hyperthyroidism have these symptoms. Click here to learn more about hyperthyroidism.

    Symptoms of an Underactive Thyroid (Hypothyroidism)

    Underactive thyroid symptoms include fatigue, depression, weight gain, constipation, leg swelling, muscle cramps and increased cholesterol levels.     Thyroid Disorders Diagnosis and Treatment

    Our office offers a number of diagnostic tests and procedures including ultrasound and biopsies to diagnose thyroid disorders. More information can be found by clicking here. Treatment for thyroid disorders includes medication to stimulate or suppress hormone production. In some cases, surgery might be suggested.
