    Definition of Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is a disease that causes thinning of the bones. This makes bones break more easily. Osteoporosis most often affects women who have been through menopause, but can affect younger women and men as well.

    Risk Factors For Osteoporosis

You are more likely to have osteoporosis if you have a small bone structure, a family history of the disease, or previous bone fractures. Cigarette smoking, alcohol abuse, inadequate amounts of calcium or vitamin D, a sedentary lifestyle and certain medications can also contribute to osteoporosis.

    Diagnosing Osteoporosis

Novant Health South Charlotte Endocrinology uses a simple, painless test to determine if you are suffering from osteoporosis. Called a DEXA Scan, or bone densitometry, the test is administered at our office and can allow us to start treatment before you break a bone. To learn more about testing, click here.
