    Adrenal Disorders and Male Hypogonadism

    What are Adrenal Glands?

The adrenal glands are small, triangular glands on the top of each kidney. The adrenal glands work with other glands to control metabolism and certain body characteristics, and to help the body cope with physical and emotional stress. (This is what the phrase "running on adrenaline" refers to.)

    Disorders of the Adrenal Glands

If the adrenal glands are overstimulated, the result can be masculinization, even in women. If the adrenal glands do not produce enough hormone, hypogonadism might result. The gonads (ovaries in women, testes in men) might have diminished function. Sperm production is often impaired in men with male hypogonadism.

    Treatment of Adrenal Gland Disorders

Hormone therapy is a common treatment for adrenal gland disorders and male hypogonadism, but treatment plans vary based on patients' individual cases. Novant Health South Charlotte Endocrinology considers a patient's entire health history before determining a treatment plan.
